The following arguments exclude all movies made about college, especially from the 80’s.
The idea that you have to join a Greek organization in college to make friends is one of pure ignorance. Imagine if you will, you are in a desert, surrounded by nothing but copious amounts of sand and a man with a kiosk. This man shows you that he is selling sand, and that it can be your own special sand for a monthly fee. You enjoy the way this man speaks and how he looks, so you buy his sand, despite the fact that there is sand surrounding you in every direction. This sand is special though, because it carries a seal of two to three greek letters. It is attractive sand and you go back into town telling all the people of your wonderful sand and how nice it is that you have it and they don’t. The people envy you and your bag of sand, despite having plenty of their own free sand. Now, go back and replace the word sand with friends. This is what is happening in colleges all over the nation. Attractive people tell you there is going to be a big party for them and all of their attractive friends. You could go, but you have to pay to be his friend. This practice is shameful, yet is not only condoned by, but rather encouraged by the administration.
Furthermore, when you make a new friend, how do act towards them at the beginning of your new friendship? Do you humiliate them? Beat them? Taunt them? Make them do absurd things for your own amusement? If you answered yes, then you are either in a Greek organization or a friendless sociopath, or both. True friends do not degrade others for their own self fulfillment.
In closing, I leave you with one question. Is it better to have no friends, or to pay someone for the self delusion of having friends?
